Is General Paper 8004 tough? How do I prepare for it?
Well, it’s tough if you don’t like reading and don’t
have a basic command of the English Language. But it is a breeze to those who
enjoy reading. Reading newspapers and even articles from websites keep you
updated about what’s going on in your country and in the world in general. Read
opinions and form your own!
I normally suggest that students work in groups with
friends. All four language skills will be developed when you prepare for
General Paper. First, you read or listen to the news. Then, you discuss what
you have read with your friends and look at issues critically. This is when you
speak; and voicing your opinions openly, i.e. speaking, is essential
if you intend to pursue tertiary studies. After reading,
speaking and listening, you will be better prepared for the final language skill
– writing.
When you are asked to write two essays, Cambridge is
actually indirectly assessing whether you have mastered the other language
skills as well!
So, grab any newspaper you can lay hands on and watch
news and business channels on television. Read fiction books you like and by
all means, watch movies. Who says you cannot enjoy yourself while preparing for
General Paper?
